Escaping caste

Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar

When thousands of Dalits – people from the lowest Hindu caste – took part in a mass conversion ceremony in central India, last month, they were following a path first established 50 years ago by one of the founders of modern India, Bhimrao Ambedkar.
He believed the only way for Dalits to escape from their low status in the rigid caste system was to reject Hinduism and convert to Buddhism.
What difference has conversion made to those who’ve followed Dr
Ambedkar’s path? Have they been able to escape the Hindu caste system?
